Southside Missionary Baptist Church has a rich and storied history that began 107 years ago with its founding by Reverend W.D. Taylor in 1917. Originally established as St. Luke Church in Miflin, Alabama, the church held its services in an old schoolhouse before the congregation began to migrate to the area where it is currently located. At that time, services continued to be held in an old schoolhouse, and baptisms took place in the nearby creek, within a community originally known as the "Quarters."
In 1941, the church underwent a reorganization under the leadership of Reverend B.F. Dudley, who decided to rename the community after its oldest living member, "Mama Liza Aaron," resulting in the community being called Aaronville. A significant milestone for the church came in 1943 when the first official sanctuary was built at the corner of Second Avenue and Oak Street, accompanied by an official renaming to First Baptist Church. Subsequently, Reverend Charles Lett led the remodeling of the church in 1949. His departure to Selma, AL to pastor and serve as president of Selma College lead to Reverend C.C. Suggs being called as the pastor in 1958. Although it was a brief two years, he was an awesome man of God who embodied the true meaning of the Spirit of God.
In 1960, Reverend Clarence Lett assumed the role of Spiritual Leader and oversaw the rebuilding of the sanctuary at its present location, resulting in a renaming to Southside Baptist Church to distinguish it from another First Baptist Church in the area. Following Reverend Clarence Lett's tenure, Reverend C.C. Williams became the Pastor in 1970, serving faithfully for thirty-four years. During his tenure the church underwent various renovations and improvements to include the purchase of pews and a van. Reverend Williams taught that there was only one race (The Human Race). Two denominations (saints and sinners) and in all things always say, "I’m grateful" until his retirement in 2004 when he was bestowed as Pastor Emeritus.
Our current pastor Reverend Frederick L. Cornish was installed as pastor under the blessing of Rev. C. C. Williams. Since his installation as pastor, he has continued to lead the church forward. Under his guidance, the church has undergone significant renovations and advancements, with a deep focus on community engagement through initiatives such as the "Community Cookout." The vision of the church is to continue its growth and development, building upon its rich history and remaining steadfast in its commitment to the community.
"The Church on the Southside of town, but on the right side of God.”
